Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has made a generous contribution of $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library in response to the impending closure of five branches. In an interview with CBC News on Monday, Reid expressed her belief that utilizing success for positive impact is crucial.
To prevent the closure of the five branches until September 30, the library decided to allocate $80,000 from its reserve funds. The library board had requested additional funding of $351,000 from municipalities earlier this year to sustain branches in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton until the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Julia Merritt, the library’s CEO, stated in an interview with Radio-Canada that Reid’s donation ensures the continued operation of the five branches until the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year. Merritt emphasized the importance of addressing ongoing financial challenges despite the immediate relief brought by the donation.
Reid’s contribution, primarily intended for staffing costs, was acknowledged by the library as one of the most substantial private gifts in its history. Merritt expressed deep gratitude for Reid’s commitment to supporting libraries and the communities they serve.
Reid, known for the popular “Heated Rivalry” series, highlighted the vital role libraries played in her journey to becoming a successful author. She emphasized the essential nature of properly funding libraries as they offer services that extend beyond providing books and magazines.
In response to the donation, the library stressed that long-term financial sustainability requires increased public funding and robust partnerships at the municipal and provincial levels. The Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage stated that they are working with the library to develop a sustainable operating model reflective of the province’s financial situation.
Reid’s contribution aims to raise awareness about the funding challenges faced by public libraries. She expressed hope that her donation will encourage others to support and prioritize public library funding. Additionally, Reid will participate in a special event celebrating libraries, reading, and community next month.
The ongoing commitment to collaboration between the library and the government underscores the importance of ensuring continued access to vibrant public libraries across the region. The Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage reiterated their support for public libraries and recognized the significance of community contributions like Reid’s donation.
