Anthony Joshua, the British heavyweight boxer, is facing potentially more severe injuries following a serious car accident in Nigeria. The incident occurred on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, resulting in a collision between a black Lexus Jeep and a stationary red commercial Sinotruck. While Joshua sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized, tragically, his close friends Kevin Ayodele and Sina Ghami lost their lives in the crash.
The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria released initial findings, stating that the accident involved two vehicles and five adult males. Two individuals died, one was injured, and two escaped unharmed. The injured victim received medical treatment, and the deceased were taken to a local morgue for further procedures and investigations by the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division.
Reports suggest that Joshua’s injuries may be more significant than initially indicated. Sources close to the former heavyweight champion have expressed concerns about potential rib and knee injuries. A video circulating on social media showed Ayodele playing table tennis with Joshua shortly before the accident, highlighting the sudden and tragic turn of events.
Following the accident, condolences poured in from various individuals, with Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, leading the tributes. Matchroom Boxing confirmed the passing of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. Joshua remains in stable condition and under observation in the hospital for further evaluation.
