Anthony Joshua has resumed training at the boxing gym nearly three weeks after being involved in a fatal car accident in Nigeria. The former two-time heavyweight world champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that crashed into a stationary truck near Lagos, resulting in the tragic deaths of two of his close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Their funerals were held in London on January 4.

While in Nigeria for a holiday and family visit, Joshua received hospital treatment for minor injuries following the accident. Speculation arose about his future in boxing given the traumatic experience. However, Joshua recently shared on Snapchat photos of himself working out in the gym, engaging in what he termed “mental strength therapy.” Additional images showed him performing various exercises, including lower leg workouts and cycling on a stationary bike. Videos also depicted him training in a pool.

Despite reports from Joshua’s uncle suggesting the boxer’s retirement post-accident, stating that Joshua had privately shared his decision with the family, there has been no official confirmation from Joshua himself regarding his boxing career. The driver of the car, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, who was charged over the crash, is currently on bail awaiting trial.

Joshua, who narrowly escaped the accident by switching seats with the driver before impact, is expected to take time to recover and contemplate his future in the sport. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, emphasized the need for Joshua to have space and time to heal emotionally and physically before making any decisions about returning to boxing. Hearn reiterated that Joshua’s voice will be the only one determining his future in the sport, emphasizing support for Joshua during this challenging period.
