Aldi has regained its position as the most budget-friendly supermarket in Britain, according to a recent study by consumer group Which?. The research compared the prices of a standard shopping list of 70 items across various supermarkets. The average cost of these items at Aldi was £121.22, narrowly beating out Lidl, which came in at £122.35 for the same groceries. Tesco, on the other hand, was slightly pricier, with Clubcard members saving an average of £2.55 on a total bill of £133.65.

In contrast, Waitrose emerged as the most expensive supermarket, with an average total of £166.79 for the same items. Opting to shop exclusively at Aldi or Waitrose could result in savings of over £45 for a family.

Which? conducts this comparison monthly, analyzing the prices of a variety of groceries across eight different supermarket chains. The list of 70 items includes both own-label products and popular brand items like Birds Eye peas and Hovis bread.

For a larger shopping list of 183 items, Asda was found to be the most cost-effective option, with an average bill of £455.52 last month. Asda’s prices were significantly lower than those of competitors like Tesco, offering savings of £9.71 for the same items.

On the higher end of the price spectrum, Waitrose was identified as the most expensive for both the smaller and larger shopping lists. With an average bill of £522.91 for the larger list, Waitrose was £67.39 pricier than Asda. The analysis also revealed that shopping at Waitrose could cost 38% more than at Aldi, resulting in a price difference of £45.57.

Reena Sewraz, the retail editor at Which?, emphasized the importance of comparing prices across supermarkets to save money, especially with the holiday season approaching. She highlighted that choosing a supermarket wisely could lead to savings of up to 27%. The analysis serves as a reminder for consumers to shop around for the best deals as they prepare for the upcoming festive period.
