Britons are bracing for heavy snowfall of up to 27cm from two consecutive blizzards as a frigid Arctic blast plunges temperatures to -7C across the nation.

Following a relatively warmer period, the week ahead is expected to bring continued wintry conditions, prompting individuals to keep their winter gear close at hand. Meteorological maps indicate the approach of low-pressure systems from the north and west, ushering in unsettled weather patterns and snowfall where cold Arctic air converges with moisture moving southward.

Towards the end of January, a significant snow event is anticipated as a low-pressure system traverses the country from the Atlantic, generating two successive blizzards. The weather system is forecasted to spread heavy rain across England and Wales, while central Scotland is likely to experience snowfall.

As the weather system progresses eastward, it will bring further precipitation, including snow, to large parts of Scotland and Wales. Subsequently, another wave of snow and rain is expected as the system moves past, with central Scotland projected to receive 26cm of snow by the morning of January 28 and widespread flurries across the country. Temperatures are set to plummet to -7C in northern regions.

The UK’s Met Office highlights a weather clash between a high-pressure system ushering in colder conditions and low-pressure systems advancing from the Atlantic.

According to the Met Office’s outlook for January 21-30, the UK is poised for a battle between milder Atlantic air masses and colder conditions from the east. Initially, cloudier and changeable conditions with showers or prolonged rain are expected, particularly in western regions, while the east may experience drier spells. Temperatures are likely to hover around average levels with potential frost in clearer areas. Towards the latter part of the period, a shift to colder weather conditions is probable, increasing the likelihood of snowfall in various parts of the country.
