Sydney Harbour authorities have issued a warning to beach visitors to steer clear of the area commonly known as ‘Shark Beach’ following a recent shark attack incident that left a child critically injured. The South Wales police have urged both locals and tourists to avoid Nielsen Park in Vaucluse, a popular swimming destination, in light of the unfortunate event that has left a young boy fighting for his life.

A statement released by the authorities emphasized the closure of the beach and advised swimmers against entering the water at this time. The young boy, now in critical condition, sustained injuries consistent with a large shark attack. Nielsen Park’s ‘Shark Beach’, usually a family-friendly spot, provides a netted area for safe water activities without the risk of encountering sharks.

Prior to the incident, the boy was reportedly jumping off rocks outside the netted zone before the shark attack occurred on Sunday afternoon. Last year, there were delays in installing seasonal shark netting at Nielsen Park, meant to deter sharks during the warmer months. The netting was eventually completed in early December, ensuring safety within the enclosed area.

The boy, approximately 12 years old, was rescued from the water near Nielsen Park by the police after reports of the shark attack. Emergency responders provided immediate medical assistance, including using tourniquets to address severe leg injuries. The child was then airlifted to Sydney Children’s Hospital for further treatment.

The timeline for reopening the area remains uncertain, and the public is advised to avoid the waters until further notice due to potential shark presence.
