The mother of a teenage girl who was hit by a car while lying on a dark country road has expressed her determination to seek justice 26 years after the tragic incident.

Lizzie Gilmour, a gifted singer, tragically lost her life in January 2000 on a ring road in York under mysterious circumstances. Despite leaving her home in Acomb around 6:30 pm that day, she was later spotted distressed and in tears in a vehicle before the fatal collision.

It is believed that Lizzie was driven to the ring road where she was struck by a car around 8:20 pm and succumbed to her injuries. Her mother suspects foul play, suggesting that her daughter may have been abducted that fateful night, and urges anyone withholding information about the incident to come forward.

The police investigation concluded that the driver involved in the accident was not responsible, as evidence indicated that the driver was not speeding and could not have avoided the collision. An open verdict was reached during the inquest due to numerous unanswered questions surrounding the events leading up to Lizzie’s death.

Coroner Donald Coverdale expressed disbelief that the sensible teenager intended to harm herself. Speculations arose about a possible argument with her boyfriend before she left home.

Lizzie, the youngest of five siblings, was described as a talented and vibrant individual by her mother, Rose Ozturkce. Rose, now 71 and a former NHS employee, remains resolute in her pursuit of justice, appealing for closure on the anniversary of Lizzie’s passing.

Rose is convinced that Lizzie did not act alone and implores individuals with pertinent information to come forward. She emphasizes that Lizzie’s untimely death has left a permanent void in their lives and pleads for truth and peace to prevail.

Renowned for her musical talents and artistic pursuits, Lizzie was remembered as a radiant soul with a promising future in the arts. Rose fondly recalls her daughter’s endearing qualities and laments the irreplaceable loss they have endured.

North Yorkshire Police, who initially probed Lizzie’s death, have assured a reevaluation of the case if new details emerge, particularly regarding individuals accompanying Lizzie before the incident.
