Police have apprehended a suspect following an incident where an officer was reportedly attacked with a blade, resulting in facial lacerations. The arrested individual, a 25-year-old man, is being held on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm.

The altercation occurred in the King Street area of South Shields, South Tyneside, during the midday hours of the day. Two officers encountered a person of interest in the vicinity, and when they approached him, he allegedly assaulted one of the officers with a bladed object, causing injuries to the officer’s face.

The injured officer received medical treatment at a hospital for minor wounds. As a precaution, there is an increased police presence in the town center to conduct investigations and provide reassurance to the public. Authorities from Northumbria Police have stated that there is no broader threat to public safety.

A police spokesperson provided details of the incident, stating that around 12:35 pm, the officers encountered a person of interest in the King Street area. The suspect proceeded to attack one of the officers with a bladed weapon, resulting in facial cuts. The arrested individual is currently in police custody.
