Luke Donald is set to discuss the possibility of becoming the Ryder Cup captain for the third time in 2027 with DP World Tour officials during his visit to Dubai this week. Shane Lowry, known for his heroics at Bethpage Black, has voiced his support for Donald to continue leading the team in Ireland.

As the former world No.1, Donald steered Europe to a remarkable victory in Long Island last September, following their successful campaign in Rome in 2021. Notably, no European captain has secured a hat-trick of wins, with only Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher achieving the captaincy more than twice.

Currently, aged 48, Donald is participating in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, marking his first tournament of the year. In addition to his competitive play, he will engage in discussions with Guy Kinnings, the CEO of DP World, regarding the upcoming Ryder Cup captaincy decision for Europe, which is expected to be made in the coming months.

Expressing his thoughts on the matter, Donald mentioned, “I will sit down for a chat with Guy this week just to see where I am. I kinda know what the job entails but just to see what they are looking for. Just a chat. I have got a couple more months to decide.” He highlighted the additional responsibilities that come with the role, especially considering his residence in the US and the need for extensive travel.

Lowry, who played a crucial role in securing a half point during the Ryder Cup in New York, believes that Donald is the right choice for the captaincy. Commenting on the situation, he stated, “I think it’s Luke’s if he wants it. Does he want it or not? I’m not sure. It’s a big undertaking for him, and he’s obviously been very successful.” Lowry emphasized the potential historic achievement of securing a third consecutive win under Donald’s leadership.

In response to the encouragement from fellow players, Donald revealed, “A few of the players have obviously expressed they’d love me to come back. I casaully asked: ‘Would you want me to do this the third time?’ And they’re like: ‘Yeah, of course, of course’.” This backing from his peers has been a positive influence on his decision-making process.

Should Donald opt out of the captaincy role, potential candidates like Vice-captain Francesco Molinari or Justin Rose could be considered for the position. The final decision is expected to be announced in March, with preparations for the prestigious event at Adare Manor already underway.
