The shift from traditional television to streaming services continues to gain momentum, with Sky at the forefront of this transition through innovative products like the Stream box and Glass TV. These devices utilize broadband connections to deliver live and on-demand content directly to households, eliminating the need for traditional satellite dishes. Despite Sky’s dominance, new options have emerged in the market.
In 2024, the launch of Freely, supported by the creators of Freeview, introduced a platform offering free access to a variety of popular TV shows, sports, and movies via broadband streaming. Initially, viewers required a new TV with built-in Freely capabilities to access this service, which was somewhat inconvenient. However, last year, the introduction of a Freely-compatible Pleio puck made it possible to bring Freely to existing televisions.
Adding to the array of choices, Manhattan has now revealed its inaugural Freely set-top box. Known for its successful Freeview boxes similar to Sky Q, Manhattan is diversifying its focus with the introduction of the Aero 4K TV Streamer scheduled for release in February. This device promises access to 60 live TV channels and over 75,000 hours of on-demand content without the need for a monthly subscription. Like Sky’s Stream box, the Aero operates over Wi-Fi, eliminating the necessity for an aerial or satellite dish.
Powered by the acclaimed TiVo OS, the Aero not only provides access to Freely but also supports popular apps such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and YouTube. Additionally, it includes TiVo+ with approximately 400 free streaming channels and a vast library of on-demand movies and TV shows.
Designed for high-quality viewing, the Aero supports 4K resolution and incorporates voice search functionality, although it does not offer recording capabilities to a hard drive.
In a statement about the launch, Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, expressed enthusiasm for the Aero, highlighting its ability to enhance any TV without built-in Freely through a simple Wi-Fi connection, providing access to live TV, catch-up programs, and preferred streaming apps at an affordable price.
The Manhattan Aero 4K TV Streamer with Freely is set to hit the market in February 2026, priced at £69.99, and will be accessible at various retailers including Currys, John Lewis, and Amazon.
