Jannik Sinner’s competitor, Hugo Gaston, abruptly retired and broke down in tears during their Australian Open match. The French player, after struggling physically, made the emotional decision to end the game prematurely despite initially showing promise by earning break points early on against the World No. 2.

Gaston, ranked World No. 93, visibly took tablets during a break but could not maintain his performance. Sinner convincingly won the first set 6-2 and capitalized on Gaston’s weakened state to secure the second set 6-1. Leading 2-0 in sets, Gaston chose to concede the match. Sinner, displaying good sportsmanship, approached his emotional opponent to offer comfort.

The match’s conclusion was disheartening for both players. Sinner, in a post-match interview, acknowledged Gaston’s physical struggles, noting a lack of full strength in his opponent’s play. The Italian expressed joy at being back on the court in a place that held special significance for him, thanking the spectators for their fantastic support.

TNT Sports commentator and former British No. 1 Tim Henman commented on Gaston’s health concerns during the match, speculating on potential illness affecting players. Despite Gaston’s early opportunities to break Sinner’s serve, the outcome seemed inevitable given Sinner’s exceptional performance.
