Zipcar, a car-sharing service utilized by 650,000 drivers, has made the decision to close its operations in the United Kingdom. The closure follows a consultation period that commenced late last year.
Approximately 650,000 drivers across the country will be impacted by this move. The American-owned company officially notified its British clientele on December 1 of its plan to temporarily stop accepting new bookings starting from the beginning of this year.
This announcement initiated a formal consultation process involving the firm’s 71 employees based in the UK by the end of 2024. In a recent email sent to customers, Zipcar confirmed the cessation of its operations in the UK.
The company’s message included details stating, “As per clause 7.5 of the member terms, consider this as formal notice that your account will be closed after 30 days. While new bookings are not being accepted by Zipcar UK, existing accounts will remain active until February 16.”
Customers were assured that they would receive a prorated refund for any unused portions of their memberships or subscriptions, calculated from the beginning of 2026.
Zipcar stated that the refund process would be automated and would not require any action from the members. Financial reports from the company indicated a widening of losses to £5.7 million in 2024 due to a decline in customer usage.
