Millions of Gmail users are set to have the option to change their email address to something entirely new. Google had previously indicated that this feature was in the works, and it is now starting to roll out globally. In an update on its Gmail blog page, Google has officially stated, “If you wish, you can switch your Google Account email ending in gmail.com to a new address with the same ending.”

This update could be a beneficial change, particularly for individuals who are no longer satisfied with their current username or have experienced altered circumstances. However, Google has emphasized an ‘important’ note regarding this capability.

Google has mentioned, “Important: The ability to modify your Google Account email is being gradually introduced to all users, and you may not have access to this option yet.”

So, how does this process operate?

The new system allows both the old and new email addresses to operate simultaneously, ensuring that any emails sent to your existing Gmail address are automatically forwarded to the new one.

Google has assured users that none of their account data will be impacted. All photos, messages, and emails linked with the original address will remain unchanged.

To determine if you can switch to a new Gmail address without losing existing emails, follow these steps:

– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if required.
– Click on Personal info in the top-left corner.
– Choose Email, then Google Account email.
– Under “Google Account email,” select Change Google Account email.
– If the option is not visible, it may not be accessible to you yet.
– Enter the new desired username, ensuring it is not currently in use or previously used and deleted.
– Click Change email, then confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Follow the on-screen instructions.

Upon completion, your new Gmail address will become your primary account email, while the old address will persist as an alternate email.
