Protests have broken out in Greenland and Denmark in response to Donald Trump’s repeated threats to take over the island territory. The US President has pledged to impose additional tariffs on countries that oppose his annexation plans.

In Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, large crowds of protesters filled the streets, brandishing the island territory’s red and white flag and adamantly stating that Greenland is not for sale. Trump argues that US control of Greenland is crucial for national security, a claim strongly disputed by Denmark. Denmark has granted permission for the US to station more troops on the island but has firmly stated that it will not “trade people” to Washington DC.

In retaliation against Denmark and other nations challenging his annexation intentions, Trump has proposed imposing a 10% tariff on the UK and other countries, with the possibility of increasing it to 25% by June 1 until an agreement is reached for the complete purchase of Greenland.

Keir Starmer responded to Trump’s tariff threats, emphasizing that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future should be determined by the Greenlanders and Danes. Starmer also stressed the importance of Arctic Security for NATO and called Trump’s actions of applying tariffs on allies for NATO security measures “completely wrong.”

A survey conducted by Verian in January 2025 revealed that the vast majority of Greenlanders prefer independence or remaining part of Denmark, with only six percent supporting joining the US. Any attempt to forcefully take Greenland, a territory of NATO member Denmark, would require NATO allies to intervene.

In Nuuk, Greenlanders took to the streets to voice their opposition to becoming part of the US, reaffirming their desire for independence or continued association with Denmark. Greenland, historically a part of Denmark, has been a self-governing entity within Denmark since 2009. Demonstrations also occurred in Copenhagen as Danes assert their standing as steadfast and reliable US allies.
