In the recent local elections, the Labour party faced significant setbacks, losing more than 1400 English council seats. However, environmentalist Chris Packham believes he has a solution for the struggling Government – a shift of focus towards the natural world. Speaking to the Mirror, the renowned naturalist and presenter outlined a strategy to regain voter support and counter the far-right, highlighting the importance of engaging with young people.

Chris emphasized the underestimated impact of climate anxiety on the younger generation, drawing parallels with his experiences during the Cold War era. He stressed that today’s youth are witnessing the immediate effects of climate change, urging for proactive measures to address eco-anxiety through his new book “Nature is the Answer: A Toolkit for Eco-Positivity.”

Advocating for a lower voting age of 16, Chris emphasized the necessity of empowering young individuals to shape their future, citing their clarity of thought and the need to make their voices count in decision-making processes. He also called for a rejuvenation of political leadership by introducing an age cap for politicians, suggesting a retirement age of 65 to bring in fresh perspectives and drive positive change.

On environmental issues, Chris proposed banning trail hunting and addressing the nation’s sewage crisis as pivotal steps towards ecological preservation. He highlighted the widespread support for such initiatives and urged swift action to protect British wildlife and natural resources.

Warning of the looming climate crisis, Chris urged immediate action from political leaders, emphasizing the need to prioritize environmental concerns in policymaking. He cautioned against the complacency observed in recent elections, stressing the interconnectedness of environmental issues with daily life challenges such as energy costs and sustainable living.

In conclusion, Chris underscored the urgency of responding to environmental emergencies and learning from experienced mentors like David Attenborough. He shared valuable advice passed on to his step-daughter Megan McCubbin, emphasizing the importance of focused activism and dedication to effecting positive change for future generations.
