A new city project in Saudi Arabia, known as Qiddiya, is set to become a sprawling metropolis worth £30 billion, making it three times larger than Paris. The ambitious development will include a racetrack among its various features, offering residents a wide array of opportunities.
The construction of Qiddiya is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative, aiming to expand the country’s economy by incorporating tourism and entertainment. Situated 45km (28.12 miles) from Riyadh and 70km (43.75 miles) from King Khalid International Airport, the city will cover approximately 360 square kilometers, housing around 500,000 residents in 20 distinct neighborhoods.
Referred to as “The City of the Future,” Qiddiya will boast a Formula 1 circuit, a stadium designated for the 2034 World Cup, and artificial beaches. Despite the emissions generated during construction, the city’s 2024 ESG Report emphasizes its commitment to sustainability.
Muhannad Aldawood, the Chief Strategy Officer, stated, “This report goes beyond data and narratives, reflecting our values, partnerships, and steadfast dedication to environmental stewardship, social impact, and economic sustainability.”
While still in progress, sections of Qiddiya have already opened to the public, including hosting the Dakar Rally and the inauguration of the $1 billion Six Flags theme park on December 31st. The park features Falcon’s Flight, the world’s longest, tallest, and fastest rollercoaster, offering riders speeds exceeding 150mph and reaching heights of 195m.
Following the opening, Six Flags CEO John Reilly expressed, “Six Flags Qiddiya City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is a groundbreaking project that will revolutionize entertainment in the region. This premier destination combines cutting-edge attractions, immersive experiences for all ages, and the thrilling rides that have established Six Flags as a global entertainment leader.”
