Police have initiated an inquiry following the tragic death of a woman in an unfortunate incident on the M6, close to Wigan. The motorway was shut down earlier today as authorities responded to a welfare concern at the Downall Green Road bridge above the southbound lane. Despite emergency services’ swift arrival, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Formal identification is pending, according to Greater Manchester Police, who stated there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman’s passing. The M6 was reopened around 4pm after an extended closure.

A police probe is underway, with officials urging witnesses or individuals involved in the incident, which occurred just before 8am, to come forward. This includes anyone who saw the incident, encountered an obstruction on the road at that spot, or possesses dashcam/CCTV footage.

The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is seeking further information on the fatal collision. In an appeal, GMP expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation during the ongoing inquiries, acknowledging the significant disruptions caused. Those with information can contact the SCIU directly or reach out to the charity Crimestoppers anonymously.
