Keir Starmer has expressed gratitude towards NHS workers, volunteers, and armed forces personnel who are dedicating their time this holiday season. In his Christmas message televised from No10, the Prime Minister commended those donning uniforms and reaching out to assist those in need during this festive period.
Acknowledging the sacrifices and efforts of NHS staff, emergency services, armed forces, and volunteers, Mr. Starmer emphasized the importance of their contributions in caring for the nation and ensuring its safety. He urged the country to raise a toast in appreciation of their service.
Additionally, Mr. Starmer recognized the financial challenges faced by many individuals and assured that addressing the cost of living remains a top priority for his government. Encouraging acts of kindness and support, he highlighted the significance of connecting with others, especially during times of hardship.
The Prime Minister recently hosted a pre-Christmas dinner at Downing Street for 93 public sector workers, along with their families, as a gesture of gratitude. The event included decorations and personalized touches to create a warm and festive atmosphere.
Among the attendees were notable individuals like Zoe Lucas, a staff nurse, and Detective Sergeant Stacey Bailey, both recognized for their exceptional contributions in healthcare and policing, respectively. Research by the Trades Union Congress revealed that around 1.2 million essential workers, including caregivers, nurses, and retail staff, will be on duty on Christmas Day.
The TUC General Secretary, Paul Nowak, emphasized the importance of recognizing and appreciating those working tirelessly on Christmas Day to keep essential services running smoothly. He highlighted the positive impact of the Employment Rights Bill, recently enacted into law, which aims to provide enhanced rights and protections for workers, including the elimination of exploitative zero-hours contracts.
Mr. Nowak emphasized that the new legislation signifies a significant step towards ensuring better job security, fair pay, and dignity in the workplace for millions of workers across various sectors.
