Thousands of individuals expecting benefits such as Universal Credit are set to experience changes in their payment schedules next month due to the upcoming Christmas and New Year bank holidays.

This year, Christmas Day falls on a Thursday and Boxing Day on a Friday. Beneficiaries expecting payments on these days are likely to receive them on Wednesday, December 24. Similarly, as New Year’s Day, a bank holiday, falls on a Thursday, payments scheduled for that day should be received on Wednesday, December 31.

Although the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has not officially confirmed the timetable for Christmas and New Year benefit payments, the aforementioned payment schedule aligns with past practices.

It is crucial to note that if payments are made earlier, recipients should budget wisely as there will be a longer gap until the next payment. The frequency of benefit payments varies depending on the type of benefit claimed, with Universal Credit paid monthly, Tax Credits every four weeks or weekly, and Child Benefit typically disbursed every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday.

In case of any discrepancies in payment dates, individuals should first verify the dates on their award notices and bank accounts. If the expected payment is missing, contacting the relevant helpline is advised, keeping in mind that helplines may not be operational on bank holidays.
