A new warning has been issued for Android users regarding the BadBox malware, which has infected millions of devices. This malware not only generates revenue for cybercriminals through intrusive adware but also poses a threat of ransomware, demanding payment to prevent the leakage of personal data.

Approximately 10 million devices, including tablets, projectors, and streaming boxes running on Android versions, have reportedly been affected by the BadBox 2.0 malware. These devices, often originating from China, are attractively priced but come pre-loaded with the malicious software.

To combat this threat and protect consumers, Google has initiated legal action against the creators and distributors of these compromised devices. Google has labeled the BadBox 2.0 botnet as the largest known botnet for internet-connected TV devices, warning of potential cybercrimes such as ransomware and DDoS attacks.

In addition to Google’s alert, the FBI has advised consumers to be vigilant and disconnect any suspicious IoT devices from their networks. Some identified devices known to have been impacted include Android TV boxes with model numbers X88 Pro 10, T95, MXQ Pro, and QPLOVE Q9.

If you have purchased a set-top box from an unofficial source, especially the aforementioned models, it is crucial to verify if it is Google Play Protect-certified to avoid risks. Consumers are also advised to steer clear of off-brand devices not from reputable manufacturers to minimize the threat of BadBox 2.0 infiltration.

It is important to exercise caution when downloading apps onto these devices, ensuring software is sourced only from official channels to prevent malware installation.
