The head of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has emphasized the need for the UK to strengthen its relationship with Europe due to concerns about the reliability of Donald Trump as a partner. Paul Nowak of the TUC stated that regardless of past Brexit divisions, both Leavers and Remainers are now focused on rectifying the flawed Brexit deal. Nowak suggested considering a UK-EU customs union to facilitate tariff-free trade while adhering to common standards for goods traded.

His remarks followed a divergence from Keir Starmer by Wes Streeting, who appeared to support a customs union agreement with the EU. Nowak highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong working relationship with the European partners, especially in light of the uncertainties stemming from the Trump administration. He stressed the significance of frictionless trade for industries like automotive, aerospace, and chemicals that rely on supply chains extending into Europe.

Nowak underscored that the priority should be to address the shortcomings of the current Brexit deal for the benefit of working people in the country. He dismissed lingering Brexit divides and emphasized the practicality of pursuing a closer trading partnership with the EU. Nowak emphasized the need to focus on securing the best possible deal with the most crucial trading partner, emphasizing economic, political, and national security considerations given Trump’s unreliability.

In conclusion, the TUC leader emphasized the importance of aligning closely with Europe economically and on broader issues such as Ukraine. The overarching goal is to establish a robust relationship with the EU that benefits working people in the UK.
