A recently declassified photograph reveals a British submarine confronting the Russian spy vessel Yantar. This development follows Defense Secretary John Healey’s disclosure in November that the Yantar had targeted RAF pilots with lasers and was operating near UK waters. Healey criticized Russia’s actions as perilous, highlighting the ship’s role in intelligence gathering and mapping undersea cables.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) released an image on Sunday showing a Royal Navy submarine and helicopter engaging with the Russian vessel. In a separate incident in November 2024, RAF maritime patrol aircraft, along with HMS Cattistock, HMS Tyne, and RFA Proteus, were mobilized to monitor the Yantar’s movements.
During a parliamentary session in January, Healey mentioned authorizing a Royal Navy submarine to surface near the Yantar as a deterrent measure, emphasizing the covert monitoring of the ship’s activities. Following this display of strength, the Yantar departed UK waters and headed towards the Mediterranean.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence reiterated the message to President Putin, emphasizing vigilance against Russian activities and the commitment to safeguard national interests. Measures include imposing sanctions, monitoring Russian vessels in UK waters, and advancing anti-submarine technology to counter evolving threats.
The Atlantic Bastion program is highlighted as a pioneering initiative to modernize naval capabilities by integrating autonomous vessels, AI-driven sensors, warships, and aircraft to protect critical undersea infrastructure from emerging challenges. Healey underscored the significance of the Yantar as a symbol of the increasing Russian threat, reiterating the government’s proactive stance in monitoring and responding to such provocations.
Healey emphasized the past successful tracking and actions taken against the Yantar, including surfacing a nuclear-powered attack submarine nearby. The Russian embassy in London criticized the UK government, labeling its actions as “Russophobic” and accused it of stoking militaristic tensions.
