Struggling households are being encouraged to verify their eligibility for assistance with living expenses, such as vouchers and cash grants, in preparation for the upcoming Budget.

A platform called Lightning Reach assists individuals in identifying and applying for various support programs, collaborating with more than 2,500 partners. On average, users of Lightning Reach receive around £750 in support. Since its launch in 2021, the website has linked over 200,000 people to over £20 million in financial aid, which includes grants from local councils and charities.

Among the partners accessible on the Lightning Reach platform are the British Gas Energy Trust, TSB, and Lambeth Council. To determine eligibility, individuals can utilize the Lightning Reach application portal.

CEO Ren Yi Hooi of Lightning Reach emphasized the pressing need for streamlined support as the Budget is anticipated to impose new tax hikes, further straining household finances.

If concerned about falling behind on payments, it is advisable to promptly contact service providers to explore available assistance options. This may involve confirming the best tariff plan or potentially arranging a payment break to alleviate temporary financial burdens.

Additionally, reaching out to the local council to inquire about eligibility for aid from the Household Support Fund is recommended. This fund, distributed by councils to low-income households, aims to alleviate financial pressures by offering vouchers or direct cash payments.

For example, City of York Council recently announced the distribution of one-time £100 payments from the Household Support Fund for the winter season. Eligibility for this assistance is typically tied to receiving council tax support, with the payment being non-repayable and directly deposited into the recipient’s bank account.
