A recent bomb discovery in Plymouth has led to the evacuation of around 800 residents as authorities work to safely remove a WWII device found on a construction site. Plymouth City Council acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the situation.
The wartime device was uncovered on January 14, prompting ongoing efforts to determine the best disposal method. Residents within a 150-meter radius of the bomb’s removal route were instructed to leave their homes immediately and are expected to remain evacuated overnight until the operation is completed, which may extend until at least 3 am.
The bomb, found in Millbay during construction on vacant land between Bath Street and Martin Street, has resulted in road closures and disruptions for local residents. Due to safety concerns, nearby buildings, including Millbay Academy and the Moxy Hotel, have been closed, with alternative accommodations arranged for affected guests.
An evacuation assembly point has been set up at Christ the King Church Hall for those in need. Plymouth City Council has urged residents to follow their social media channels for updates on the evacuation process. While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the sudden evacuation, the council emphasized the importance of completing the operation swiftly and safely.
