As a heated meeting involving Denmark, the US, and Iceland comes to an end, Greenland has issued a stern warning to the American leader, asserting that they cannot be owned. The possibility of the US acquiring Greenland is deemed unnecessary by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who made this statement after the tense diplomatic discussions.
During the meeting, the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers held talks with US Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the future of the Arctic island. Rasmussen indicated that there is a clear desire from President Trump to “conquer” Greenland, but he believes that the meeting has influenced a shift in the American stance, as reported by the Express.
“We emphasized that this is not in Greenland’s best interest,” Rasmussen emphasized. Despite the “frank” discussions at the White House, a “fundamental disagreement” persisted, according to the Danish foreign minister.
Denmark has announced plans to bolster its military presence in Greenland starting immediately, as confirmed by the country’s defense ministry just before the talks commenced in Washington DC. Rasmussen, alongside Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt, addressed the media in a joint news conference following their discussions with JD Vance and Marco Rubio.
Rasmussen stressed that the US acquiring the Arctic territory is entirely unnecessary and that there is no immediate threat from Russia. President Trump previously stated that annexing Greenland could occur within a matter of weeks or months, expressing a desire to expedite the process significantly.
Meanwhile, Greenland’s energy minister Naaja Nathanielsen expressed concerns at a press conference in Westminster, highlighting that US military actions would symbolize a breach of the rule of law, potentially disrupting the existing world order for Western allies.
