A man who intruded on a Remembrance Day gathering by pretending to be an admiral reportedly bragged to his neighbors about being a “spy” for NATO, claiming to assist in monitoring Russian activities. Jonathan Carley caused a stir when he attended a ceremony honoring fallen soldiers in Llandudno, North Wales, where he placed a wreath while donning a Rear Admiral’s uniform and displaying 12 medals on his jacket. Despite never serving in the Navy, Carley’s charade was exposed after his photo circulated online, leading to his embarrassment and subsequent arrest.
Prior to the event, Carley had masqueraded as a high-ranking official, informing neighbors – who believed he had a military background – that he was affiliated with NATO. According to a neighbor residing near his £700,000 residence in Harlech, Gwynedd, Carley mentioned his involvement in naval intelligence and his role in surveilling the Russians. The neighbor recalled Carley’s claims of being in the navy and witnessing him in uniform, which added credibility to his fabricated story.
Despite his polished demeanor and military-like presence, Carley’s fabrications were uncovered, revealing him as a former history teacher. Police detained Carley after spotting him wielding an unusually large sword at the Llandudno event on November 9, 2025. Upon his arrest at home, Carley cryptically remarked to the authorities, “I’ve been expecting you,” leading to the recovery of the ceremonial sword, pristine military attire, and medals.
Carley admitted to unlawfully impersonating a navy admiral at the ceremony and was fined £500 for wearing unauthorized military attire. Additionally, he was instructed to pay £85 in costs and a £200 surcharge by Llandudno Magistrates’ Court. During the proceedings, Carley informed the police that the naval uniform was acquired during his time in the cadets, but he had embellished it with rear admiral insignia from a tailor and purchased medals online.
District Judge Gwyn Jones criticized Carley for deceiving attendees at the ceremony instead of genuinely honoring those who have sacrificed for their country and community. Jones emphasized that Carley’s actions disrespected all who have served, reflecting poorly on him for choosing to deceive on a day of significance for many.
