A Braintree couple, Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, have successfully reduced their monthly heating costs to just £40 by participating in a new energy scheme trial. Instead of using a gas boiler, they now rely on a unique system consisting of over 500 computer banks housed in a shed. This setup generates heat, which is then transferred to their hot water system, resulting in significant savings compared to their previous bill of £375 per month for heating their two-bedroom bungalow.

Terrence Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed his relief at no longer worrying about the cost of heating. The couple had the data centre installed in December 2024, which has since provided them with efficient and immediate heating. The HeatHub data centre, developed by Thermify, is part of UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project aimed at assisting low-income households in transitioning to net zero energy consumption.

The Bridges praised the scheme, emphasizing the comfort and cost savings it has brought to their home. They opted to install the system in their shed, avoiding disruption to their living space. Mr. Bridges highlighted the benefits of the technology, mentioning its effectiveness in heating their entire bungalow evenly without any cold spots.

Travis Theune, CEO of Thermify, highlighted the company’s goal of reducing fuel poverty in the UK by offering clean and affordable energy solutions. The project has also garnered praise from Daniel Greenwood of Eastlight Community Homes, who commended the initiative for making homes warmer, greener, and more cost-effective for residents.

The successful trial in the Bridges’ home has demonstrated significant carbon reductions and lower heating costs, leading to plans to expand the project to an additional 50 homes in the next phase. UK Power Networks’ ambitious SHIELD project aims to scale up to benefit up to 100,000 units annually by 2030, ensuring that vulnerable households can access new low-carbon technologies as the UK progresses towards a more sustainable future.
