A full decade has elapsed since the conviction of Don Collins for murder, a case marked by a disturbing deathbed video where the victim identified him and exposed his brutal motive.
The tragic incident involved Collins and his neighbor, Robbie Middleton, who was celebrating his eighth birthday. Instead of joy, the occasion turned into a nightmare as Collins tied Robbie to a tree, doused him in petrol, and set him on fire.
Despite suffering burns on 99% of his body, Robbie remarkably clung to life for over ten years before succumbing to skin cancer resulting from the severe burns. In 2015, Collins was sentenced to 40 years in prison, a decision that brought some closure for Robbie’s mother, Colleen, who had always sensed something unsettling about the killer.
Reflecting on the events, Colleen described Collins as having a cold and expressionless demeanor, even from a young age. Robbie, the youngest of Colleen and Bobby’s three children, was known for his love of birthdays, including the fateful day in 1998 when he was attacked.
Encountering Collins on his way home, Robbie, who had allegedly been assaulted by Collins previously, fell victim to the horrific crime. Despite the severe burns, Robbie managed to reach home, where his mother found him unrecognizable and severely injured.
Robbie underwent numerous surgeries and skin grafts, displaying immense resilience and positivity despite the challenges. However, his suffering intensified over time, leading to a diagnosis of skin cancer, ultimately resulting in his untimely death at the age of 20.
Collins, who failed to register as a sex offender, faced murder charges following the emergence of a crucial deathbed video where Robbie accused him of the attack. The video, recorded shortly before Robbie’s passing, served as vital evidence in Collins’ trial.
Collins received the maximum 40-year prison sentence, providing some sense of justice for Robbie’s family. Colleen expressed relief at the outcome, attributing blame to Collins without a doubt in her mind.
Before the trial, Colleen and Bobby were awarded $150 billion in a civil case against Collins, symbolizing acknowledgment of Robbie’s innocence and the family’s suffering. Colleen found solace in the recognition of her son’s ordeal through the substantial award, emphasizing the importance of seeking justice for Robbie’s memory.
