In a late-night address, former President Donald Trump announced an escalated plan for mass deportations of legal migrants in response to the recent Washington DC shooting incident involving National Guard troops. The shooting, allegedly carried out by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, prompted Trump to expand his deportation efforts beyond those directly linked to the incident. Trump declared a temporary halt on migration from certain regions, aiming to remove individuals deemed not beneficial to the United States or lacking loyalty to the country.

Trump emphasized the termination of federal benefits for non-citizens and the potential revocation of citizenship for those disrupting domestic peace. He broadened his deportation initiative to encompass any foreign national considered a burden, security threat, or incompatible with Western values. Notably, Trump clarified that even individuals holding green cards would not be exempt from the deportation measures.

While addressing the shooting aftermath, Trump initially targeted the Afghan community before shifting focus to the Somali population in Minnesota. He made derogatory remarks about Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, criticizing their handling of the Somali community in the state. Trump’s discriminatory comments regarding Ms. Omar’s background and citizenship status were factually incorrect, as she legally immigrated to the US as a minor and later became a naturalized citizen.

During a subsequent Q&A session, Trump baselessly accused Somalians of financial exploitation and criticized the US government’s support to Somalia. Despite admitting that Somali individuals had no direct involvement in the shooting, Trump continued to disparage the community and reiterated his attacks on Ms. Omar.

When questioned about the asylum status granted to the alleged shooter during his administration, Trump evaded direct confirmation and emphasized the challenges of reversing asylum decisions. He perpetuated unfounded claims about illegal immigration numbers during the Biden presidency and misrepresented census data to support his narrative.

Trump’s deceptive rhetoric and discriminatory actions have sparked controversy and raised concerns about his administration’s immigration policies. His inflammatory remarks and disregard for factual accuracy have drawn criticism from various quarters, highlighting the need for responsible and informed governance.
