Denmark is said to be dispatching military reinforcements to Greenland in response to escalating threats from Trump regarding the potential takeover of the Arctic island.

Initial units are being sent to the semi-autonomous region of Denmark to pave the way for the arrival of larger Danish Army and defense branch forces, as reported by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. A preliminary unit from the Danish Armed Forces is already on the ground, focusing on coordinating logistics in anticipation of further deployments.

In a statement on Wednesday, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated, “We are proceeding with establishing a more permanent and increased presence in Greenland by the Danish Armed Forces, in collaboration with other nations. Similar to the involvement of other NATO countries in exercises and training in Greenland in 2025, we anticipate a continuation of this cooperation in 2026.”

Poulsen characterized the heightened military presence as a direct response to the challenges posed in the Arctic region.

Shortly after the Danish broadcaster released this information, Donald Trump restated his belief that the United States “requires Greenland for National Security purposes” and criticized NATO in a post on Truth Social.

The US president emphasized the necessity of acquiring Greenland for the proposed missile defense system called the “Golden Dome,” asserting that NATO should support the US in this endeavor to prevent Russia or China from gaining control of the territory.

Trump has persistently argued for US ownership of Greenland to thwart potential Russian or Chinese encroachment on the strategically important area. He reiterated these points from a recent Truth Social post, where he claimed that Russia and China do not fear NATO without US involvement.

Despite Trump’s push to acquire the resource-rich region, only 17 percent of Americans support his plan, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. The majority, around 71 percent, view the idea unfavorably, including a significant portion of both Democrats and Republicans.

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet with the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers at the White House today. This meeting comes following Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen’s reaffirmation that Greenland is not for sale and would opt for Denmark over the US if a choice were to be made.

Greenland’s stance has received support from EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, who emphasized that decisions regarding Greenland are the prerogative of Denmark and Greenland alone. She stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty of Greenland and its people in determining their future.
