A woman in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, fell victim to a romance scam that cost her nearly £60,000. Cindy Palecek, a 67-year-old retired physical therapy assistant, was charmed by a man she met online who claimed to be a construction worker. He gained her trust by offering a fake investment opportunity that promised high returns to help her clear her debts.
After investing a substantial amount of money, Cindy realized she had been deceived when her supposed beau disappeared with her funds. She was left devastated and had to resort to remortgaging her house to cope with the financial loss. Now, she is cautioning others, both men and women, about the perils of falling for online romance scams.
Despite reporting the incident to the authorities, Cindy has taken matters into her own hands by starting a fundraising campaign to recover some of her stolen money. She has also resorted to working at a supermarket in a bid to repay her debts. Cindy shared her ordeal, expressing her disbelief at how someone could commit such a heartless act and continue with their life.
The scam involved setting up an investment account, which Cindy later discovered was controlled by the con artist. When she attempted to withdraw a portion of her investment, the man vanished, leaving her in a state of panic and desperation. Reflecting on her experience, Cindy emphasized the importance of staying vigilant against online scams and urged others to be cautious when dealing with financial transactions.
To support Cindy in her quest to recover from the scam, donations can be made through her GoFundMe page.
