A concerning alert has emerged that smartphone users in the UK should not overlook. Virgin Media-owned UK network O2 has witnessed a surge in text scams targeting consumers across the country, aiming to extract personal information and money deceptively.
The company has noted a substantial increase in various attacks, including fake parking ticket texts, recruitment messages, fraudulent prize schemes, and the notorious “Hi mum” tactic. The “Hi mum” strategy, in particular, is a menacing ploy where scammers impersonate a family member in distress to solicit funds, resulting in significant financial losses for victims.
Virgin Media O2 has proactively blocked over 600 million suspicious texts but emphasizes the importance of phone owners in the UK remaining vigilant. Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the evolving tactics of scammers, exploiting current events and targeting vulnerable individuals with enticing offers and fake schemes.
Despite the network’s efforts, Mackenzie urges people to stay cautious, advising them to exercise care when receiving unexpected calls or messages, refrain from sharing personal details, and report dubious texts promptly to 7726.
