Donald Trump seemingly disclosed a private text message he received from French President Emmanuel Macron before threatening to impose 200% tariffs on French wine and Champagne. Trump indicated that the tariffs were intended to pressure Macron into joining his proposed “Board of Peace.” In response to Macron’s reported refusal to join the board, Trump insinuated that Macron would soon be out of office and suggested that the tariffs would compel him to join, although it was not necessary.
France is reportedly declining the invitation to participate in the US-proposed initiative, according to a source close to Macron. Trump later shared on Truth Social that Macron had messaged him about Greenland before the tariff threats were made public. The text exchange showed Macron expressing agreement with Trump on Iran and Syria issues but questioning Trump’s actions regarding Greenland.
Within the text conversation, Macron also proposed arranging a meeting with Trump and other G7 leaders post-World Economic Forum in Davos and extended an invitation for dinner in Paris on Thursday.
The “Board of Peace” was initially introduced in September to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction but has since evolved into a broader initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts, as detailed in recent invitations to world leaders. The draft proposal sent to approximately 60 countries outlines a requirement for members to contribute $1 billion in cash for a membership lasting over three years.
Countries such as Australia, Brazil, Cyprus, Egypt, Italy, Jordan, New Zealand, Pakistan, Turkey, and Vietnam have been invited to join the board. Trump also mentioned extending an invitation to Putin, who is reportedly deliberating on the offer.
