A woman has opened up about a unique facial condition that causes her eye to protrude when she chews, but she has opted against corrective surgery. Marion Karawia, aged 35, first displayed this condition at the age of five while having dinner.

After a medical consultation, she was diagnosed with Marcus Gunn Syndrome (MGS), a condition where movements of her jaw trigger her left eyelid to elevate due to nerve rewiring. Marion shared that dealing with this condition during her upbringing impacted her self-esteem, especially when interacting with peers at school or going on dates.

As a co-founder of a skincare business, Marion revealed that she was offered surgical intervention to rectify the issue, but she made the decision to decline it, expressing her fondness for her unique feature and how it defines her.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Marion expressed, “During my teenage years, it was challenging to cope with. When I move my jaw, it appears as if my eye is bulging, but in reality, it is just my eyelid moving dramatically.” She further added, “It was particularly difficult when socializing with new people or going on dates. I would try to conceal it or avoid eating altogether.”

Marion highlighted that MGS is a condition she was born with, and navigating her teenage years and early adulthood was emotionally taxing, impacting her confidence.

Reflecting on her journey, Marion emphasized the mental toll the condition took on her, especially in social situations like dating. She is now happily married to her husband, Karim, who she mentioned has always been indifferent to her syndrome.

Taking to social media under the handle marionsworldd, Marion aims to raise awareness about MGS and inspire others to embrace their unique traits. She shared, “I’m sharing my story to support those who have faced bullying, embarrassment, or insecurity due to MGS or any physical condition. You are valued, you are exceptional, and you are cherished.”

Marion concluded by stating, “I cherish my MGS; it is a part of me and always will be.”
