An Australian woman, TL Huang, recently revealed her harrowing experience inside a strict Chinese ‘fat prison’ where she underwent a 28-day program. The facility in Guangzhou, China, enforces a strict regime that prohibits unhealthy foods like instant noodles and tightly controls residents’ daily lives. Living conditions are severe, with residents housed in dormitories behind high walls, gates, and electric fencing, under constant surveillance by security personnel.
According to Huang, inmates have limited freedom, with strict rules dictating their every move. She described the facility as a place where residents are confined, with no opportunity to leave without valid reasons. Huang’s decision to enter the camp, one of China’s state-sponsored ‘fat prisons,’ was influenced by her mother’s suggestion, as she had gained weight from consuming takeout meals.
During her stay, Huang endured mandatory weigh-ins twice a day and rigorous four-hour exercise sessions. Meals were carefully monitored and consisted of controlled portions of nutritious foods like prawns with vegetables, chilli steamed fish, and braised chicken. However, after three weeks, she fell ill with flu and a high fever, leading to a hospitalization due to her decreased energy levels.
In China, over half of the adult population is classified as overweight or obese, with projections indicating a potential rise to two-thirds by 2030. To address this issue, facilities like the one Huang attended have been established to help individuals manage their weight, with participants paying for structured programs that include accommodation, meals, and exercise routines.
Huang disclosed that she paid $600 for her stay, emphasizing that it was a worthwhile investment in her health and well-being. Despite the challenging workouts and strict dietary regimen, she acknowledged the positive impact on her lifestyle, noting a weight loss of 6kg during her time at the camp.
Reflecting on her experience, Huang shared that while the ‘fat camp’ was intense, completing the program felt rewarding and empowering. She encouraged others considering such programs to view them as a positive step towards a healthier future, emphasizing the importance of building sustainable habits and knowledge for long-term success in weight management.
