A visitor captured a terrifying moment when a shark bit her leg and attempted to pull her into the depths while she was snorkeling in the ocean.
Tayane Dalazen was snorkeling with friends in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, when she had a frightening encounter with a nurse shark. The serene experience of swimming with fish in the sky-blue waters was abruptly disrupted by the approaching shark.
Footage recorded by the tourist displayed the shark’s slow approach towards Ms. Dalazen before suddenly latching onto her right leg, leading her to the hospital.
In a brief 15-second video, Ms. Dalazen can be seen gracefully swimming underwater as the cameraman captures the shark moving around in the background. The shark appeared to be gliding past the swimmer before swiftly attacking her.
The peaceful scene quickly turned chaotic as Ms. Dalazen struggled against the shark, which had clamped onto her leg with its sharp teeth and suction mechanism.
Unlike more menacing sea predators like Great Whites, nurse sharks are not typically known for attacking large prey. They have the ability to crush shelled prey with their serrated teeth and feed on crustaceans and mollusks.
The incident left Ms. Dalazen with a significant bite mark on her leg, but she only sustained minor injuries thanks to the prompt action of her tour guide and friends who were present during the attack.
Nurse shark attacks are uncommon but can occur in tourist areas due to irregular feeding patterns, according to local authorities. Following the incident, the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation initiated an investigation.
After being taken to the hospital, Ms. Dalazen shared photos showing multiple serrated marks in a crescent shape on her leg and humorously commented that the shark “must be missing a tooth.” The incident took place in front of a fishermen’s association at a popular tourist spot.
