Keir Starmer is poised to affirm the ongoing commitment to assist families in managing the cost of living without any reduction in efforts. The Prime Minister will convey to voters that 2026 is the year they will experience tangible change resulting from the government’s initiatives, promising to utilize all available resources to enhance the lives of British citizens. This assurance coincides with Rachel Reeves’ statement that the government exceeded expectations in 2025 and intends to do so again in the upcoming year.
In the following week, Mr. Starmer will engage with commuters to address passenger support, following the historic freeze on rail fares after three decades. He will convey to families: “This Labour government is standing by your side, making every effort to alleviate the cost of living and improve quality of life. The decisions we have made will start to yield positive changes for more individuals in 2026.”
“Reducing your energy bills by £150, elevating the national living wage, assisting with commuting and school run costs, freezing rail fares for the first time in 30 years, capping bus fares, and extending the fuel duty cut until September are all part of our efforts. These are tangible changes that will impact your daily life. Britain is on the path to renewal, and 2026 will be the year when more people experience this transformation. We are committed to utilizing all available resources to support you in managing the cost of living and enhancing your lives. That is my pledge to all of you.”
Government sources argue that Labour’s strategy is effective, citing six interest rate reductions since taking office, a decrease in inflation, and mortgage costs at their lowest since the mini budget in 2022. During the first Cabinet meeting of the year on Tuesday, the Prime Minister will instruct ministers to continue advancing efforts to address the cost of living. He will emphasize: “I understand that families nationwide are still concerned about the cost of living. Our fight to enhance their lives will continue without pause.”
Meanwhile, the Chancellor defended the government’s actions but acknowledged that more must be done. In an interview with The Sunday Mirror, she stated: “The economic plan of this government is beneficial for working people. Since the General Election, wages have outpaced inflation, millions have received a pay increase through minimum wage hikes, and interest rates have dropped at the fastest rate in 17 years.”
“We promised change, and we are delivering on that promise. However, I recognize that more action is required. The cost of living remains a burden for families, and further steps are essential to kickstart the economy. We defied expectations last year, and I am determined to do so again to deliver the stronger, fairer, and more secure country that the British people voted for.”
