Lord John Bird, the founder of the Big Issue, expressed his mission to combat poverty as he entered Parliament. He advocated for the establishment of a new government department dedicated solely to eliminating poverty in the UK. Lord Bird emphasized the need for a “ministry of poverty prevention and cure,” noting the absence of such a department since the welfare state’s inception after World War II.
He criticized the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for functioning as an “emergency department,” rather than proactively addressing poverty’s root causes. Lord Bird highlighted the importance of preventing the perpetuation of poverty across generations and reducing the number of individuals driven into the criminal justice system due to economic hardship.
Additionally, Lord Bird reiterated the necessity for specific government targets on child poverty, challenging the government to take more decisive action. He proposed legally binding targets similar to those in environmental legislation, aiming to hold the government accountable for poverty reduction efforts.
In the upcoming year, Lord Bird plans to push for his proposed amendment on children’s wellbeing and school legislation in the House of Lords, seeking to enforce impactful measures against poverty. He emphasized the importance of measuring the government’s progress through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assess its effectiveness in addressing poverty issues.
Lord Bird affirmed his unwavering commitment to dismantling poverty since joining Parliament, prioritizing long-term solutions over temporary relief measures. He stressed the significance of advocating for marginalized communities to improve their quality of life and secure essential concessions for those most affected by poverty.
In response, a government spokesperson highlighted ongoing efforts to address poverty by increasing the national living wage, reducing energy bills, and implementing measures to lift children out of poverty by 2030. The government aims to tackle poverty at its core by removing barriers and enhancing opportunities for low-income families, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to enhance living standards nationwide.
