A waste collector in the UK is advising people to refrain from placing a specific item in recycling bins due to the mess it creates. Ignoring this guidance could lead to accumulation of garbage.
Ashley, also known as @Theno1.binman on TikTok, recently shared a video urging the public to be cautious about disposing of certain materials that can cause problems. He highlighted that the item tends to scatter and is of no use to anyone.
While seemingly innocuous, shredded paper can pose challenges for waste collectors during their routes in the UK. Ashley emphasized the inconvenience caused by shredded paper and emphasized the difficulty in recycling it due to the excessive breakdown. He described the aftermath of tipping shredded paper on windy and wet days as messy and time-consuming to clean up.
He emphasized, “Please refrain from putting shredded paper in recycling bins. Dispose of it as trash since it cannot be effectively recycled after shredding.”
Some councils in the UK accept shredded paper in home recycling bins, but it must be contained properly. Ashley recommended using containers like a Primark bag, which is recyclable, to store shredded paper.
Conventional carrier bags are generally not suitable for recycling bins as they are considered “soft plastics” that can disrupt sorting machines. Some supermarkets provide designated collection points for these bags instead of home recycling options.
Alternative methods for discarding shredded paper efficiently include placing it in a paper envelope or a cardboard cereal box. Reusing the paper for composting or animal bedding is also suggested as a way to reduce waste. It is important to adhere to local council guidelines regarding disposal methods.
In a separate online alert before Easter, the waste collector cautioned that improper disposal of Easter egg packaging could lead to councils refusing rubbish collection. Incorrect bin placements may result in the entire collection being rejected to prevent contamination of other waste on the truck.
