Russia carried out a second nationwide drone and missile attack on Ukraine within a span of four days. The intense assault overnight involved 300 drones, 18 missiles, and seven cruise missiles hitting eight regions, resulting in the death of at least four individuals in Kharkiv. This attack poses a significant setback to ongoing efforts to bring an end to the conflict as it nears its fourth anniversary.
The assault was specifically targeted at plunging Ukrainians into freezing conditions as temperatures dropped to minus 16 degrees in parts of Kyiv. The majority of the strikes aimed at critical infrastructure such as heating systems, energy centers, and electricity substations. Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasized the importance of internal resilience, stating, “Where Russia seeks destruction, Ukrainians stand united in support. Continuous global support for Ukraine is essential, especially during harsh winters when air defense systems are crucial.”
One of the strikes in the Kharkiv region resulted in the deaths of four individuals at a mail depot, leaving several hundred thousand households without power in Kyiv. The city has been grappling with severe power shortages, with the recent strikes causing the most significant electrical outage experienced thus far.
Amid the chaos, Olena Davydova, 30, sought refuge at a government-provided shelter in Kyiv’s Dniprovskyi district to charge her phone. These shelters, known as “Points of Invincibility,” offer basic necessities like food, drinks, warmth, and electricity to those affected by power outages.
The recent escalation of attacks follows a previous large-scale assault by Russia, which involved hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, including a new hypersonic missile, targeting western Ukraine. The United States condemned Russia’s actions as a dangerous escalation, occurring while peace negotiations are underway. Russia’s strategy of depriving Ukrainian civilians of essential resources aims to weaken public resistance to its invasion.
The ongoing conflict has taken a toll on civilians, with 2022 being the deadliest year for Ukrainian civilians since 2020, according to the U.N. Reports indicate that 2,514 civilians lost their lives, and 12,142 were injured in Ukraine, marking a 31% increase from 2024.
President Zelensky called for swift deliveries of agreed-upon air defense systems from the U.S. and Europe, along with additional aid to counter Russia’s latest offensive. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported the downing of 11 Ukrainian drones overnight, with seven destroyed over Russia’s Rostov region.
As the conflict reaches its fourth year in February, the origins of the war trace back to the Maidan Revolution, where pro-Russian factions clashed with Ukrainian forces due to Kyiv’s shift towards Western alliances.
