On a chilly day, the warm ambiance of a quaint country pub is truly inviting. I had eagerly anticipated visiting this charming establishment nestled in a small village in Vale of Glamorgan for several reasons. Firstly, it boasted a stellar reputation for its cuisine. Secondly, having passed by it on numerous cycling trips, I often felt tempted to abandon my bike and step inside for a pint.
However, the primary allure lay in the fact that the pub is owned by a notable sports figure. Two decades ago, I witnessed Gavin Henson’s remarkable kick that secured a historic victory for Wales in rugby. Despite not being the designated kicker, Henson’s daring 44-meter kick from a challenging angle altered the course of Welsh rugby history, marking the beginning of a new era.
Renowned for his distinctive appearance and talent, Henson gained fame beyond sports circles. Alongside singer Charlotte Church, he became a fixture in tabloids and magazines, earning the moniker “Welsh Posh and Becks.” Despite his celebrity status, Henson’s focus on family life in the tranquil village of St Brides Major is evident from his avoidance of the spotlight in recent years.
In 2019, Henson and his wife, Katie, took over The Fox, infusing new life into the establishment. Despite facing challenges amidst the pandemic and Brexit aftermath, the pub garnered praise for its food and hospitality. Presently, The Fox exudes a timeless charm with its cozy yet stylish interior, offering a delightful setting for patrons.
During my visit, I relished the warm ambiance of the pub, complete with festive Christmas decor. Savoring Butty Bach ale and Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone lager, I perused the menu, impressed by the reasonable wine selection. Opting for the Sunday menu, I indulged in crispy ham hock and cod-salmon fishcake starters, followed by sumptuous mains of roast Welsh beef and shoulder of lamb.
The meal, accompanied by roast potatoes, buttery mashed potatoes, and a rich gravy, was a culinary delight. Despite skipping desserts, the overall dining experience was exceptional. The bill, which included starters, mains, beverages, and kids’ meals, was reasonable, reflecting the quality of service and cuisine. The inviting atmosphere and delectable offerings left a lasting impression, prompting thoughts of a return visit – sentiments echoed by fellow patrons.
