Zipcar, a car rental company, has revealed its decision to shut down its operations in the UK by the end of this year. The UK general manager, James Taylor, informed customers via email that discussions are underway, and bookings have been paused beyond December 31. Taylor mentioned that Zipcar is initiating formal consultations with its UK staff to propose ending operations in the country.
For customers who have already reserved a car for Christmas, the service will proceed as planned. However, individuals who have booked a vehicle for the New Year will be contacted by the company. Customers with reservations after December 31 will be refunded without any cancellation charges.
Taylor stated, “We are proposing to cease the UK operations of Zipcar and have initiated consultations with our UK employees. New bookings will be temporarily suspended until a decision is reached following the consultation process.”
Although Zipcar is planning to exit the UK market, customer accounts will remain active until a final decision is made post-consultation. Zipcar, an American company, provides hourly and long-term car and van rentals via a mobile app, offering three membership options with varying monthly fees.
The reason behind the sudden closure of UK operations was not disclosed by the company. Zipcar customers in the US can continue using the service, as there are no plans to close operations in the States; however, a US membership will be required.
As per the company’s most recent accounts, the UK branch had 71 employees at the conclusion of the previous year. The accounts indicated a deepening loss of £5.7 million in 2024 due to a decline in customer trips.
In its published accounts from October, Zipcar attributed the losses to increased operating costs, such as electricity and insurance, along with a volatile market affecting residual values. The company noted a substantial increase in pre-tax losses compared to the previous year, primarily driven by reduced revenue resulting from fewer trips and shorter trip durations in 2024. Zipcar attributed these challenges to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis impacting discretionary spending.
