Border officials are set to confiscate phones and SIM cards from individuals arriving on small boats. This new legal authority, effective from Monday, is being lauded as a significant step forward in combatting smuggling syndicates. Government sources have questioned the lack of prior powers to seize phones, despite numerous immigration laws enacted under the current administration.

During the previous government’s tenure, the Home Office was compelled to acknowledge wrongdoing for unlawfully seizing phones from small boat arrivals following a legal challenge in the High Court.

Martin Hewitt, Britain’s Border Security Commander, emphasized the ruthless nature of criminal smuggling groups involved in illegal migration, emphasizing the indifference to human life. Since the initiation of the Border Security Command, nearly 4,000 crackdowns have been carried out against these networks, ranging from confiscating funds to apprehending key figures. The implementation of new tools and legal support is seen as a pivotal moment in intensifying efforts against these nefarious networks, securing borders, and preventing loss of life.

Last year, an estimated 36 individuals perished while attempting to reach the UK. The process of phone seizures will commence at the Manston immigration facility in Kent, employing specialized technology to extract data from devices. Additionally, officials will be granted expanded search powers to locate concealed SIM cards.

Furthermore, as of today, individuals caught transporting or storing equipment such as boat engines for human trafficking could face up to 14 years in prison. Those engaged in researching or orchestrating illegal migration schemes may be sentenced to a maximum of five years behind bars.

Borders Minister Alex Norris affirmed the government’s commitment to restoring order and control at the borders by targeting the criminal networks fueling this perilous trade. Stringent new laws with powerful offenses have been put in place to intercept, disrupt, and dismantle these criminal operations swiftly, thereby disrupting their supply chains.

The ongoing issue of channel crossings poses a significant challenge for the government, with a 13% year-on-year surge exacerbating the situation. Data indicates that 41,472 individuals undertook the risky voyage, marking a 13% increase from the previous year but falling short of the 2022 peak of 45,774. The number of small boat arrivals has notably escalated since 2018 when only 299 landings were recorded.
