A court has heard that a former businessman, identified as David Turner, aged 61, viciously assaulted his wife while they were on a luxury holiday at the Le Meridien Khao Lak Resort and Spa in Thailand on July 4, 2024. Turner admitted to causing actual bodily harm to his wife, who recounted the horrifying ordeal where she was strangled, punched, and kicked by Turner, who was described as agitated and aggressive during the attack. The victim shared her fear of Turner potentially harming her further even after a non-molestation order was in place.
According to the prosecution, Turner and his wife were vacationing with their adult son and Turner’s father in Thailand when the incident occurred. Turner, who had been drinking, became ill and accused his wife of disappearing, leading to a violent outburst where he physically assaulted her by pushing her, strangling her, and inflicting multiple blows to her body. The victim expressed genuine fear for her life, especially when Turner wielded a knife and threatened her in front of their son.
After the incident, the victim and her son retrieved their passports from Turner and left the resort. She sustained severe bruising on various parts of her body as a result of the attack. Turner, who had no prior criminal record, was arrested upon his return to the UK.
In court, the victim described the traumatic impact of the assault on her life, causing her to experience panic attacks, nightmares, and an inability to return to work for an extended period. Turner, through his defense, expressed deep remorse for his actions, claiming the assault was out of character after 28 years of marriage. He was sentenced to a 20-month suspended prison term, unpaid work, a probation program, rehabilitation, and was issued a restraining order, in addition to being ordered to pay compensation and a victim surcharge.
The victim’s harrowing experience highlights the lasting emotional and psychological effects of domestic abuse, underscoring the importance of seeking support and assistance in such situations.
