An 18-year-old day care worker has been accused of causing the death of a baby boy just before his first birthday in an attempt to seek attention.
Theah Loudemia Russell was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and felony assault in the first and third degrees on January 13. It was noted in arrest records that it was unclear if she had entered a plea or secured legal representation.
The arrest followed a three-month investigation into the passing of 11-month-old Harvey Muklebust. Russell contacted emergency services on September 22 the previous year, reporting that Harvey was not breathing.
Authorities from the Scott County Sheriff’s office launched an inquiry into the incident at Rocking Horse Ranch in Savage, Minnesota. Just days before the tragic event, police responded to a distress call involving a baby girl who was having difficulty breathing, with blood and foam emanating from her mouth.
According to reports from People, the baby started breathing again by the time officers arrived. She was then taken to a hospital by her parents for treatment. Initially, the incident was believed to be a medical episode with no immediate suspicion of foul play. The child was examined, released, and seemed to be in good health over the weekend.
Upon returning to the day care on September 22, the baby girl displayed similar symptoms again. Her parents once more took her to the hospital, but the police were not contacted on this occasion. Subsequently, the Minnesota Department of Human Services suspended the facility’s license the following day due to concerns about the safety of the children.
During a press conference, Savage Police Chief Brady Juell mentioned that Russell’s actions immediately drew suspicion, leading investigators to view her as a person of interest. Chief Juell stated that Russell had been employed at the day care for three weeks. Investigators delved into Russell’s background, including her previous work history and acquaintances.
Chief Juell further stated, “We have reason to believe that Theah Russell intentionally smothered these children on three separate occasions to gain attention. Tragically, the third incident resulted in the death of Harvey Muklebust.”
Harvey, who was about to turn one, was described in an obituary as a source of joy and happiness from the moment he was born. A fundraising campaign was initiated to assist with funeral expenses, portraying him as a child who brought immense joy with his infectious smile and laughter. Chief Juell noted that the case had deeply affected the entire community.
