The UK is facing a warning of heavy rainfall up to 70mm, leading to potential flooding in certain areas. Residents are advised to prepare an ’emergency kit’ in anticipation of adverse weather conditions.

Recent showers are exacerbating the already saturated ground from last week’s severe weather, including the effects of Storm Goretti. The arrival of low-pressure systems is bringing further unsettled weather, with rain and potential icy conditions as Arctic air meets moisture moving southwards.

A yellow weather warning for heavy rain has been issued for parts of southern England on Thursday, raising concerns of additional flooding. The warning is in effect from 9am until the end of the day, cautioning about the risk of surface water flooding due to heavy rainfall on already saturated ground.

Residents are encouraged to assess the risk of flooding to their properties and consider creating a flood plan along with an emergency flood kit. The Met Office predicts up to 70mm of rainfall, with uncertainties about the precise areas affected, including London, the South East, parts of Wales, and the West Midlands.

The weather warning highlights the movement of a deepening low-pressure system across England and Wales on Thursday. The forecast anticipates persistent and heavy rainfall throughout the day, potentially leading to surface water flooding in some regions due to the already saturated ground.

The Environment Agency has issued three flood warnings for England, indicating expected flooding, along with 40 flood alerts for potential flooding situations. Additionally, a separate yellow warning for ice covers a significant portion of western and northern Scotland, warning of icy surfaces forming as a result of melting snow and heavy rainfall.

Looking ahead, the Met Office’s forecast for the upcoming days suggests continued rainfall with temperatures remaining average in the south and colder conditions in the north. Thursday night may bring heavy rain and strong winds in certain areas.
