Keir Starmer and European leaders have united to warn Donald Trump against interfering with Greenland. The US President’s remarks about potentially acquiring the Danish territory have raised concerns. In a joint statement, the leaders emphasized that Greenland’s fate should be determined by Denmark and Greenland alone.
Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, cautioned that any US attempt to seize Greenland could jeopardize the NATO defense alliance. Trump’s public declaration of interest in Greenland has stirred diplomatic tensions, with him citing national security reasons for the move.
The leaders stressed the importance of upholding the UN Charter’s principles, including sovereignty and territorial integrity. They underlined the US’s role as a crucial NATO ally and highlighted the defense agreement between Denmark and the US.
Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected Trump’s assertions, reaffirming their commitment to the NATO alliance. UK’s Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, reiterated support for Greenland’s self-determination and emphasized its role within the Kingdom of Denmark and NATO.
Former CIA director John Brennan expressed concerns about Trump’s actions, suggesting they reflect American imperialism and could strain the NATO alliance. The situation has raised questions about the alliance’s cohesion in the face of unilateral actions.
