An easyJet passenger recently shared her experience of challenging the airline’s fine for an oversized bag. Louise Machin was surprised when she had to pay a €58 (£51) fee upon her return from Chania Airport in Crete, despite carefully checking her bag’s size beforehand.

After contacting the bag manufacturer to confirm compliance with easyJet’s rules, Machin received a refund. This incident reflects a wider issue highlighted by consumer group Which?, where travelers are being fined due to discrepancies in airport bag sizers.

Machin, a freelance film and TV professional, faced the fine on a trip to Crete earlier this year. Despite prior checks and no issues on her outbound flight, she encountered resistance from ground staff during her return journey.

Refusing to accept the airline’s claim, Machin sought support from the bag manufacturer, Cabin Max, which verified her bag’s adherence to regulations. Armed with this evidence, she successfully obtained a refund from easyJet.

Which? has noted similar cases across airlines, with minor discrepancies leading to fines. The group advises passengers to challenge such fees when confident about their bag’s size.

Despite easyJet claiming no issues with the sizers, they acknowledged Machin’s case, apologized for the inconvenience, and issued a refund. The airline emphasized its standardized sizer procedures and commitment to addressing customer feedback promptly.
