The Swiss bar owners, where a tragic fire claimed the lives of 40 individuals on New Year’s, have been living under police protection due to escalating public outrage. Jacques Moretti and his wife Jessica were granted emergency security measures amidst the aftermath of the devastating incident that resulted in the death of 20 children, some as young as 14, and left 116 others injured. Mr. Moretti’s father, Jean, disclosed the security arrangements while defending his son and daughter-in-law against charges of negligence-related offenses as they faced prosecutors.

Addressing the situation, Mr. Moretti Snr emphasized his son’s accountability as the company owner but stressed that guilt remains to be determined by the justice system. He asserted their willingness to cooperate, stating, “We are law-abiding citizens, not offenders. My son is a man of integrity who will face the consequences. Our thoughts are with the victims, as we too have experienced profound loss and grief.”

Describing Jacques as a diligent individual profoundly impacted by the tragedy, Jean mentioned his son’s emotional state, highlighting the distress caused by the fire. Jacques Moretti was placed in pre-trial detention post questioning, while Jessica, after interrogation, was released. During a national day of mourning in Switzerland, Jessica expressed her sorrow, extending apologies for the unforeseen calamity at their establishment.

The investigation into the fire’s origin in the bar’s basement revealed a potential cause involving champagne bottles with party sparklers igniting sound insulation foam. The authorities’ lack of fire safety inspections since 2019 at the bar will also be scrutinized alongside the accountability of the bar owners. The incident, claiming victims from 19 different nationalities, resulted in 83 individuals still hospitalized.

At an official memorial service, young survivors emotionally recounted their harrowing experiences, moving dignitaries and onlookers to tears. They emphasized resilience and the need for collective efforts towards a better future. The service included a moment of silence across Switzerland to honor the departed, with heartfelt speeches delivered to commemorate the lives lost in the tragic fire.
