Keir Starmer has assured that British Members of Parliament will have the opportunity to vote before any British troops are sent to Ukraine following a potential peace agreement with Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin.
This commitment was made by the Prime Minister in the House of Commons after the UK, France, and Ukrainian leader Volodymr Zelensky signed a joint declaration in Paris to allow military presence once a ceasefire is in place. Starmer announced plans for the UK and France to establish military bases in Ukraine and construct secure facilities for weapons and military equipment to assist in Ukraine’s defense.
During today’s Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), Starmer emphasized that any deployment of British troops to the region would require a parliamentary vote. He stated that a legal process would be necessary for deployment, which would occur post-ceasefire to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities, conduct deterrence activities, and establish protective military installations. Starmer also confirmed that a formal statement would be presented to the House at the earliest opportunity.
Responding to queries from Tory chief Kemi Badenoch regarding troop commitments, Starmer clarified that troop deployment would only happen after a ceasefire, with the purpose of supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities, conducting deterrence operations, and constructing military hubs. He mentioned that the specific number of troops would be determined in alignment with military strategies currently under development, and this information would be disclosed to Parliament before any deployment occurs.
Starmer reiterated his stance on parliamentary oversight, emphasizing the importance of a legal framework for any deployment, which would require a debate and vote in the Commons.
